Anyone who is annoyed by my lack of blog updates can just go ahead and join the club. Not much seems to be going on here at the house and not for a lack of trying. The main interior thing we are still waiting on is the glass wall, but the spacers needed for us to install the glass are taking forever to come in from the glass company that we ordered the wall from. I'm not sure if this is a manufacturing issue or a moron issue, but I tend to think it's the latter. They keep saying they should be in any day and Tim keeps calling and calling for updates but none of forthcoming. Now it's the Jewish holidays and since it's an Orthodox company I can't see an update any time soon. Le sigh…
There are little things here and there getting done, like the snazzy new cover for the sump pump hole, the hole that I sacrificed my left foot to back in April. Now the hole is fixed but my foot still hurts from the break. Damn hole!
Alex is also designing an arbor for our backyard as required by the building department. Don't ask me why, but the DoB only approved our plans with the stipulation that we put some sort of covered, non-combustible structure in the backyard next to the sunroom. This had something to do with needing a minimum amount of covered space in a shared garden area even though our garden is not shared. There is no arguing with retarded people. So we are going to build the thing out of steel and put metal decking on top. Alex is designed it to later have a swing bench attached. I always wanted a backyard swing, so there you go. If you are going to have to satisfy the idiotic needs of the DoB you might as well get a swing out of it.
Meanwhile, I've been saying since mid-June that after the wall went in that I would have the house professionally cleaned from top to bottom. Three months later with the wall not done I finally just broke down and hired someone to do it today. The general cleanliness level around here had gotten so bad it was too much for me to keep up with and it was making me unhappy on a daily basis. A five hour cleaning was $150 well spent.
Here's something you have never seen. Our house—clean! Can you spot the Vincent doppelganger pillow?
I used Zen Cleaning, a service that specializes in pet friendly, eco-friendly cleaning. They use all safe cleaning products (like Method, which I really love) and burn essential oils in your home while cleaning, so you don't get that heavy cleaning product stench. They even make up your bed with little containers of loose organic tea and organic dark chocolate. And they wear cute little Asian outfits. Most importantly the cleaning under and behind everything. I'm definitely going to need to do this once a month going forward as two birds, two cats and one boyfriend are a lot to keep up with.
With my bonus from work I bought some more things for around the house. On the way are a cherry wood console table for the master bedroom and two black leather ottomans for the sofa. I'm still looking for a really nice modern table fan to replace the old crappy one we had. If anyone sees one, send the link my way!
Most importantly, my year long search for a comforter for the master bedroom has ended. You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find a spread with the right shades of green and red to match the walls that didn't look too girly or busy. I've looked literally everywhere for months on end to no avail until I found this one. I think it's pretty fantastic—how many other blankets do you know of that you can play Twister on? It's sort of a faux-suede and its super warm and soft, really comfy. It will be great in the winter I'm sure. Jules models it for you here:
Keep coming back to hear updates about incompetent plumbers and electricians. Yes, there's extortion involved—whee!
$150 for a FIVE HOUR CLEANING with (I'm guessing multiple cleaners?) eco friendly products and tea and chocolates on the pillow and everything?! Never ever leave New York. You are so spoiled. Contrary to what you may think, living in the sticks means cleaning services like that draw big bucks. Enjoy.
