Over the past 3 weeks or so, not one day has gone by when we have had all of the following: heat, plumbing, hot water, electricity and gas. Some days were are really lucky and we get to be missing more than one at a time! Every night when I come home, it's a fun little game try to figure out what's broken and what we will be suffering without. Tonight is a triple whammy—no heat, no hot water and no gas! It’s like a crappiness trifecta! Keyspan, our gas company, really screwed us over today. They were here to change the gas line from the house to the street. In the process they were going to remove the giant hulking rock in the front patio area. They were the ones who offered to move it--they swore up and down that it wouldn't be problem. But I guess after laboring for hours they just threw in the towel. So they just gave up and walked away at around 6 pm, leaving us with no cooking gas and no gas to heat the water. They dug a trench in the front and got to the foundation wall, but couldn't or wouldn't break through. Tim's guys are going to do that tomorrow morning and supposedly Keyspan is coming back to finish the job shortly thereafter. I am skeptical.
On top of that, our brand spanking new furnace is leaking all over the place and the plumber can't figure out where it is coming from. They needed to shut it off and let it dry out overnight, so they can turn it on again tomorrow and see the source of the leak. Hopefully it's just a pipe that needs replacing and not the whole damn furnace.
And the bonus is that all of the electric for the house is temporarily running on just two circuits, which the space heaters are constantly overloading. It’s just not enough juice for us. Literally, if Eric wants to dry his hair, I have to turn off my computer and all the lights. Some day this will make a great story, and we’ll laugh and laugh about it. Right now we’re all just huddling for warmth.
